Renesse aan Zee may still have the name of a holiday area for young people, but in recent years the village has developed into a real seaside resort for families. The gentlemen of Renesse were influential men. Their castle, Moermond Castle, still exists. Lord Alard’s children founded a village called Sheralardskindskerke, which was later bastardized to Serooskerke. The dike broke in Serooskerke in 1953 and flooded the Schouwen polder. The Schelphoek nature reserve was created with new dikes. Although Burgh and Haamstede form one place, both villages from which they come are still clearly recognizable.
